Minneapolis Ranch ExteriorClassic Ranches were L-shaped, one-level buildings with low-pitched roofs and wide-open spaces underneath. The low roofing and the numerous amount of windows were an attempt to conserve energy, allowing the sun to pour into the abode. The house was set back from the street, which was one of the complaints. Ranches were not designed with a mind to public consumption; they were designed to protect the privacy of the owners. The chimney and the garage were visible from the street. In the back were the accoutrements of a typical suburban family: hard-surface patio; kidney-shaped swimming pool; outdoor barbecue.
